AUSTRALIA’S greatest rivalry could soon move from the hallowed ground of Suncorp Stadium to the QPAC stage.
Former Courier-Mail journalist and best-selling author Hugh Lunn has been quietly working on State of Origin: The Musical.
Can you come up with an alternate name for the musical? Tell us in the comments section at the end of this story.
He said the script would probably include a blending of fact, the real beginnings of the iconic rugby league series, as well as a fictional fourth Origin played in Townsville and a dastardly plot to kidnap the Wally Lewis statue from outside Suncorp Stadium.
Lunn said he wanted to see local stories in local theatres.
“You look at the musicals that are running around Australia at the moment, like An Officer and a Gentleman, South Pacific and others; they’re not really about us,” he said.
“You get huge crowds to the Origin, so this would be a good opportunity to bring sport and theatre together.”
Origin great Wally Lewis endorsed the idea in an interview on 612 ABC Brisbane this morning.
“I was just thinking about a name for it and … after seven consecutive series defeats you could probably (call it) ‘NSW: Les Miserables’.
“(State of Origin players) do have a sing-song at the end of the game but I don’t think it would quite reach the heights we will see in the musical.”
